Research
At the beginning of the smart speaker project, research was carried out through interviews, ethnography studies and desk research of the current smart speaker market. Through this a design specification was created, detailing the requirements of the design.
Further research was carried out during the development of the design, specifically into materials. This was in the form of a series of test:
- Using laser cutting to give MDF flexibility to create more organic forms.
- A variety of fabrics were tested to determine which was best for insulating the speaker sound and reducing reverberations.
Development
Iterative prototyping and user trials, enabled the design to develop towards it's final solution. The sheets below detail that process and the images documented highlight the clear evolution of the design.
Testing
The short video below is a selection of clips taken throughout the process to determine how different, shapes, materials and positioning of speakers impacts their sound quality.
Final Renders
With only a couple of small render projects to practice with, rendering the speaker in Keyshot was still fairly new and I plan to learn more and work to develop better quality of renders in future projects.
Phlo App
Alongside the Smart Speaker, there is a mobile phone app which syncs your health data to monitor your flow mindset and removes distractions by using AI generated playlists to reduce your amount of phone 'pic-ups' to skip songs. With your permission the app also has the ability to lock your phone until a timer is completed to prevent you from getting distracted by notifications while you study or work.
